Steps to take when a site shows an error or a blank screen.

If your site shows an error message or a blank white screen, work through these steps to find the cause.


Think about what changed

Errors usually follow a change. If you recently updated, installed, or activated a plugin or theme, that is the most likely cause. Try deactivating the most recent change first.


Turn on debug mode

Open the site, go to WordPress, then Debug, and turn on WordPress debug logging. The log shows the exact error and the file it came from (see Debugging your site).


Restore a backup

If you cannot pin down the cause, roll the site back to a backup from before the problem started (see Restoring a backup). Every site is backed up daily.
